Places of Interest. Part 4. Berlin. Reichstag.

When the decision was made to move the Federal Government to Berlin, it was time to reawaken the  Reichstag  building from its long years of slumber on the Mauerstreifen, the military zone between the two sides of the Wall. The building has since been completely modernised, and today's visitors to the Reichstag can look out from the building's glass dome to get a bird's eye view of the hustle and bustle in the city. There are also a number of government buildings in the vicinity of the Reichstag, for example, the  Bundeskanzleramt  ( Federal Chancellery ) and the  Brandenburg Gate . Without a doubt, the  Brandenburg Gate  is Berlin's signature attraction. Being built in 1791, it was just one of many old city gates around the city of Berlin which, at that time, was still a manageable size. The decorative Pariser Platz was laid at the foot of the gate and is now home to many of the city's important buildings, for example, the Hotel Adlon with its ...

Places of Interest. Part 3. London. The Tower of London

The   Tower of London , officially   Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London  is a historic   castle   on the north bank of the   River Thames   in   central London . It lies within the   London Borough of Tower Hamlets , which is separated from the eastern edge of the square mile of the   City of London   by the open space known as   Tower Hill . It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the   Norman Conquest . The   White Tower , which gives the entire castle its name, was built by   William the Conqueror   in 1078 and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was also used as a prison from 1100 ( Ranulf Flambard ) until 1952 ( Kray twins ),   although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set...

At the doors of Bayreuth is the Eremitage, with historical parks from the 18th century and the old palace with fountains and water attractions and the orangery. In 1715 margrave Georg Wilhelm built the old palace near the residential town of Bayreuth as the central feature of a court hermitage. In 1735, when margrave Friederich took over the government of the margraviate, he presented the Hermitage to his wife Wilhelmine. Japanese Cabinet Fascinated by this unique complex, the margravine immediately began enlarging it. First adding new rooms to the old palace including a music room, a Japanese cabinet and the Chinese mirror cabinet in which she wrote her celebrated memoirs. Between 1743 and 1745 various buildings and fountains, such as the ruined theatre and the lower grotto were produced from designs of Joseph St. Pierre in the hermitage of margrave Friederich. The new palace and the upper grotto were built from 1749 to 1753. In the sections added by Wilhelmine to the existing g...

Places of Interest around the world. Part 1. The Lublin Castle

The Lublin Castle is situated in the centre of Lublin City in Poland on the CzechΓ³wka River. It is in the immediate vicinity of the main international bus station, so it is quite easy for tourists to get to this historic place on foot. If you arrive in the city by train, you can take a direct bus to the centre of the city. The castle is clearly seen on the hill and you won't miss it. The castle houses a big museum on  Castle Hill, which in the past  was a difficult place to conquer. This natural location was the reason why, probably in the 6th century, an early-medieval defensive settlement was established on the hill. A Gothic castle built by  Casimir the Great  in the first half of the 14th century was ruined during the war in the second half of the 17th century and consequently demolished in the 18th century. The castle is the seat of  the National Museum in Lublin , which has valuable exhibits displayed in archaeological, numismatic, and military departm...

German language lesson - Viel ⚡️Viele, the usage in real life

Viel ⚡️Viele What is the difference in usage? Let's figure it out together. So, we use " viel " for the singular number (!) to denote a large volume. Most often used with real or abstract nouns. Beispiele: ◽️Heute habe ich viel Arbeit. - I have a lot of work today. ◽️Im Sommer hat er endlich viel Freizeit. - He finally has a lot of free time in the summer. ◽️Inge hat viel Neues gekauft. - Inga bought a lot of new things. Viele is used with plural nouns (!) when we can count them. You can use “many” and  “ a lot of” in English. Beispiele:   ◽️Zum Fest sind viele GΓ€ste gekommen. - A lot of guests came to the celebration. ◽️Im letzten Jahr wurden hier viele neue HΓ€user gebaut. - Many new houses have been built here over the past year. ◽️Heute bringt mir mein Freund viele spannende BΓΌcher. - Today my friend will bring me a lot of exciting books. ◽️Wie viele Tassen Kaffee trinkst du pro Tag?  -  How many cups of coffee do yo...
